Kyungsung Lee

Was born in Basel in 1983 and studied Directing at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, before completing postgraduate studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He is a Professor in the Theatre Academy at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul. He founded the theatre company Creative VaQi in 2007 and has been its Artistic Director ever since. His works include «Mobile Exhibition» (2009), «The Dream of Sancho» (2010), invited to the Edinburgh Festival, «The History of Gangnam» (2011) and the series «Theaterpraxis» (2013-2014), «Before / After» (2015), «Talk About Her» (2016), «Walls - Iphigenia in Exile» (2016), a Korean-German co-production, «Walking Holiday» (2017), «Unknown Neighbours» (2017), a Korean-Australian collaboration, and «Love Story» (2018). He is interested in the critical examination of themes arising out of the faultlines within society. In aesthetic terms, his work operates in ways that are multimedia, performative, installation-like and experimental. He has won numerous awards for his innovative work, including the Medal for Cultural Services presented by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism in 2018 as well as several of Korea’s most prestigious theatre prizes.
