Content description

Unlike Sophocles’ ancient drama »Oedipus Rex« – as adapted by Robert Icke and currently running at the Residenztheater – Mariam Megvinytė’s adaptation of the myth focuses on Oedipus’ wife and mother, Iocasta.

To do so, the author layers 1990s Georgia – a time of violence and upheaval – beneath the present as an unresolved foundation, interweaving Iocasta’s ancient legacy with a biographical quest for a form of femininity that must painstakingly reclaim its identity from the ruins of its own history.

The Haraki Theatre in Tbilisi, which Megvinyte runs alongside other opposition artists, is one of the few non-state theatres in Georgia still able to perform regularly.
