Cosmea Spelleken

Cosmea Spelleken (1995) studied media art at the HfG Karlsruhe and since 2020 has been studying directing and screenwriting at the Film Academy Vienna. Her works move at the intersections of theater, film, and new media, developing hybrid narrative forms for a digital age.

With her projects, she was invited to, among others, the Nachtkritik-Theatertreffen, the Heidelberg Stückemarkt, Radikal Jung, and the Bavarian Theatre Days. Her works have been nominated for the Berlin Theatertreffen as well as the Nestroy and Faust prizes.

In 2021, she was chosen by Theater heute as the Nachwuchsregisseurin des Jahres, and in 2022 she received an award for outstanding achievements in the digital space. She understands working at the intersections of the genres film, theatre & (neue) Medien as an opportunity to find a new language for timelessly valid stories in order to open them up to a new audience.

In the 2025/2026 season, Cosmea Spellecken will direct «Nach Mitternacht».

«After Midnight» tells the story of two days in 1936. Nineteen-year-old Sanna takes refuge with her brother Algin, a blacklisted author. In between the parties, cafes and bars she begins to recognise that the world she lives in has been increasingly taken over by ideology. Keun’s novel from exile is a haunting depiction of daily life under fascism – her second international success after «The Artificial Silk Girl».
