Philipp Stölzl
Philipp Stölzl ist 1967 in München geboren.
Ursprünglich Bühnenbildner, später Musikvideoregisseur und Werbefilmer, teilt er heute sein Berufsleben zwischen Kino und Theater.
Seinen Weg beginnt der Sohn des Historikers und Politikers Christoph Stölzl nach dem Abitur an den Münchner Kammerspielen als Assistent von Bühnenbildnern wie Jürgen Rose, Ezio Toffolutti und Volker Pfüller. Danach geht es als Bühnenbildner von Armin Petras und Johanna Schall hinaus in die Provinz und nach Berlin.
Mit Ende Zwanzig dann der Wechsel vom Theater zum Film. Stölzl arbeitet bei den österreichischen Musikfilm-Legenden Dolezal & Rossacher zunächst als Ideenlieferant, rutscht kurze Zeit später in die Regie. Ein Video für Rammstein macht ihn in der Szene international bekannt, Arbeiten für Stars wie Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Pavarotti, Madonna und Mick Jagger folgen.
Mitte dreißig dreht Stölzl seinen ersten Spielfilm, die Tragikomödie «Baby». Die Arbeit fürs Kino wird zur zentralen Leidenschaft. Es folgen das historische Bergdrama Nordwand und die romantische Komödie «Goethe!», danach der erste englischsprachiger Film, der Actionthriller «The Expatriate».
Stölzls Verfilmung von Noah Gordons Bestseller «Der Medicus» wird mit über 4 Millionen Zuschauern allein in Deutschland zu einem Kassenschlager, es folgt eine dreiteilige epische Neuerzählung von Karl Mays «Winnetou» fürs Fernsehen, der Musikfilm «Ich war noch niemals in New York», die Verfilmung von Stefan Zweigs «Schachnovelle». Außerdem übernimmt Stölzl beim TV Mehrteiler «Der Schwarm» die Regie der finalen Folgen. Stölzls Filme wurden mit diversen Preisen ausgezeichnet.
Anfang vierzig kehrt die Bühne eher ungeplant in Stölzls Leben zurück.
Eine «Freischütz» Inszenierung in Meiningen, bei der Stölzl Regie und Bühnenbild übernimmt, wird zum Überraschungserfolg. Es folgen Opern- und Schauspielinszenierungen an den Salzburger Festspielen (Benvenuto Cellini, Cavalleria Rusticana) der Ruhrtriennale (Rubens), den Bregenzer Festspielen (Rigoletto) am Theater Basel (Faust, Der fliegende Holländer, Frankenstein, Andersens Erzählungen), dem Schauspiel Dresden (Der Phantast) der Deutschen Oper und der Staatsoper in Berlin (Rienzi, Parsifal, Il Trovatore, Turandot) und dem Residenztheater München (Das Vermächtnis, James Brown trug Lockenwickler, Andersens Erzählungen). Stölzls Inszenierung von «Das Vermächtnis» eröffnete das Theatertreffen 2023.
In der Spielzeit 2024/2025 inszeniert er am Residenztheater «Die G'schicht vom Brandner Kasper» von Franz von Kobell.

One stormy night in 1836, Hans Christian Andersen arrives uninvited at the home of his childhood friend Edvard Collin, who is to marry his fiancée Henriette the next day. Andersen has travelled through the wind and the rain to once again confess his love for Edvard. The family provide a frosty reception and the groom himself is out celebrating his last night as a bachelor. Only Henriette feels attracted to the unconventional charm of their guest, who lives in a fantasy world continually surrounded by characters from his own fairy tales. He magically transforms a sober room into a sparkling underwater landscape and castles of otherworldly beauty. And he starts telling his friend’s fiancée the fairy tale of The Little Mermaid: burning with love for a Prince, she wishes to become human and is willing to sacrifice her voice and her home to do so – risking her life.

After a quarter of a century, the time has finally come: Brandner Kasper returns to the Residenztheater, where it has already been performed over 1000 times! Franz von Kobell's tale has been a cultural treasure with cult status in Bavaria since its publication in 1871. A 75-year-old sprightly locksmith and hunting assistant from Tegernsee is to be called away to heaven. However, Kasper defeats the Boanlkramer, whom St. Peter had commissioned to bring the old man to him, while playing cards and drinking Kerschgeists. «The story of Kasper Brandner» is a poignant play about the deeply human desire to confront one's own transience. Director Philipp Stölzl grew up with the material as a Munich resident and poses the most elementary question of humanity in his new old «Brandner Kasper»: How do I deal with my own mortality?
